Discover Heroic Rescues

The former RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) Watson-class lifeboat was in active service in Peterhead from 1939 to 1969, rescuing 496 lives during her residence.

Did you know? The Julia Park Barry of Glasgow is the most celebrated vessel to be stationed in the North East. Two of her most notable rescues happened in 1940 and 1942, when her crew performed heroic lifesaving acts in the severest of weather conditions.

Since the opening of HMP Peterhead in 1888, a close connection with the town’s seafaring community has existed, making the prison the perfect home for the restored Julia Park Barry of Glasgow.

Today, the vessel is now the centrepiece of the museum, sharing her remarkable story while celebrating over 200 year history of the lifeboats and lifeboatmen in Peterhead. During your visit, marvel at one of its restored engines and explore historic photos, newspaper exhibits and archive .
